Great ambience

Though the constantly looping water fx in the background could have had an interesting ebbing effect for more force. The slow pad melody was nice, and I would have enjoyed hearing a couple more shifts with a secondary countermelody as the piece evolved, especially due to the slowness and simplicity. Nonetheless, this is soothing as is. Nice work.

I'll do better next time.
Thanks for the suggestion and the comment.

Unfulfilled drop after the build

The pulse of one of your synths at :15 and subsequently after that is pushing the limits for a clipping threshold on my speakers.
A lot of nice and interesting effects going on here. Panning and volume variances all come together to make up for the lack of a strong melody or melodic sense during the piece. This however does not eliminate all sense of repetition.
The drop is well done, if a bit clippy. But it just drops away at 2:38 really abruptly. It feels... disjointed and disappointing. There was no resolution, just suddenly we're back to the building stage.
The retransition to a heftier beat works but this feels incomplete.
Good luck on your future work, you clearly have an interest in sound design and good effects usage.

MakerThe responds:

Wow, this is some great feedback! I see that I really need to look into the clipping. Guess I could have gone through some measures to keep the song a bit less repetitive and the same goes for the drop. Got a little lazy and bored with the song in the end. Will probably do some more work on it later, so this is all good stuff to keep in mind, so thanks a bunch (:

Good starting point

Lead and rhythm guitar are just overpowering everything else in this mix.
The synthstrings (while these are technically background) and even the percussion I feel are being swallowed by how powerful you've made your lead (which, by itself is a bit...abrasive in my opinion).
The entire thing feels like it's a two instrument show, and I think there's so much more you can do with what you have.

As far as arrangement goes, this sticks really close to the original source and really doesn't have any flair that makes me think this is 'your' cover of the piece. More personal touches and additions are always helpful for well covered tracks from known games.

But personal taste rules above all. I'm willing to bet that there are plenty of users who like your lead choice and enjoy a more 'straight up cover'.
Good luck with your future projects.

Treviabot92-Virstein responds:

Yeah, the cover was kinda determined by personal taste. The drum work kinda fits with the song, in my opinion.

Thanks for the review!

EDIT: I also hope I fixed some of the problems with abrasive guitars. And making the synth strings and drums pop out.

Some of this, some of that

Seems a bit empty at times, which exposes your somewhat weak drum sounds. This definitely relies on a groove based appeal and I feel that the repetition of the main riff so frequently and often are detractors to the enjoyment. A little more variation would help this piece a lot. Sample quality wasn't great, but it didn't hurt my ears, which is always a good sign.
The vocal clips are half and half, sometimes they really help drive things forward, and other times they seem a bit out of place (this is more of a personal preference type of thing though).
Keep on making music,
cheers.

grooveT3K responds:

Thanks for the constructive feedback mate!
I must admit I should have put a little more time and effort into this but I guess I wasn't making it with an epic track in mind more of a bit of fucking around with some new ideas and a track sort of popped out of it!
The vocal sample were just the first thing I came along that sounded like I could do something with and again I didn't spend a lot of time look either ;)

Thanks for the feedback mate!

Quite nice

Happy enjoyable work with that 8-bit feel and it loops well. Liked the little stops and the well done pitchbends.

ElBonzi responds:

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. This is pretty much the only place I post my stuff so encouragement is great!

Pretty nice

Piano sample is a bit echoey for my taste in the high registers.
Good supporting background which never overpowers the melody and is never buried by it.

DrMackFoxx responds:

I would agree that the reverb is a bit much at some points. Well, practice makes perfect. Glad to hear you liked this track and thank you for the review. I appreciate it. :)

Not remotely pleasant.

The instruments you are using are... out of tune and in the high and obnoxious register.
The attack and decay on a lot of your leads makes them seem out of time.
This is kind of a train wreck from a mastering perspective.

chaoticmarin responds:

1. You are clearly missing the point of a 16bit remix and are rating a song badly based on the fact that it doesn't fit your personal tastes. Why do this to me?

2. There is no attack or decay in any part of this song.

Solid, classic trance

Everything here is done fairly well. This track has a classic feel in both a good and a bad way.
The good: Highly reminiscent of other good trance tracks. Mastering and production are solid. The sounds work together.
The bad: There's nothing to differentiate it from other trance tracks. The beat is incredibly standard with little variation. Melodic rhythm does nothing to stick out and grab attention.

PrEmoEffect responds:

I've been working with developing new types of leads that I can use. I was never terribly enthralled by the typical trance saw lead. I'm going more for the distortion plucks. I've usually been much better with basses than leads, so that's something I'm trying hard to work on.

Pitchbends on a piano patch? Really?

Whoa, reverb everywhere. Sounds like a saloon. Also: pitchbends on a piano patch? Just doesn't really work at all...
This just seems like a really plain import of a midi. Not even a well mastered one either.

DrMackFoxx responds:

Hmmmm... I see. I think you may have misheard things considerably. There is no pitch-bending on the Piano patches. For example, at 0:32 and 0:39, what you are hearing are two sets of a series of two 32nd notes on two octaves, followed immediately by, more or less, a 7/16th note. While at 0:55, the Strings patch backing up the lead piano does have pitch-bending, while the piano does not. These things seemed like good ideas to try and make this remake more true to the original.

I'm well aware that you can't do warbling notes and whatnot on a piano in real life and the effect certainly does not sound good through MIDIs, either. Although you can purposely have a piano out of tune if it works with the song you are putting together. I would admit this rearrangement was not entirely successful. Still sounded good enough to post, though.

Sorry this track wasn't what you were looking for or expecting. :shrugs shoulders:

Could drop some of the highs

Lead is a bit fat for my tastes and your arpeggio background from 1:20-2:00 is a bit... screechy.
Break from 2:00-2:45 is either a bit too sparse for too long or has ridiculously bright high pitched stuff which is not pleasant to my ears.
This really isn't bad, just some things which grate against me (I know, I suffer from the bright high-pitched issue all the time).

DJoe responds:

lol its supposed to be high pitch at points mate, not everyones taste :)
