Really loud on my machine

I'm getting massive clipping throughout everything. It's pretty painful to listen to.
The theme itself (what I can make out through the distortion) isn't bad. Has a cheesy 80's movie fanfare backing track feel.

Khuskan responds:

Semi-intentional - we compressed and distorted the hell out of the acoustic instruments as we were aiming for a 1960s/60s sound.

Entertaining, loops well

This seems a little more like an overworld theme, to be honest. A tad too heavy for your typical town (except perhaps antagonist town in the skies).
Flute lead comes in a little jarringly and the vibrato on it doesn't always jive with the clean atmosphere you have set up. You mentioned a lot of the balancing issues in your post, so I'll spare you the repetition.
It's compositionally interesting and loops well so nice work on that.

Step responds:

Thanks ^^. Personally I like the vibrato on the flute, although that might be personal preference, and I agree that it could interrupt the smoothness of the rest of the track.

Also yeah, I did make this too heavy for a town theme. D:

Thanks for reviewing, I appreciate the helpful feedback!

Very solidly thought out

Not sure if this fits the Ambient category all that well.
As a piece, your song has some interesting texture switches, but there is a lot fighting for attention in your high and mid ranges. This track is clearly groove based, and it has a pretty steady one going.
Good change of pace around 3:45 to keep things fresh, though a little more change in the drumwork could have been good there too.
This is a solid song with a lot going for it.

Poorly paced ambience

You could cut out half of the intro build-up while maintaining the haunting atmosphere you want to give this song (especially seeing as you drop out of it afterwards anyway).
Really, this seems like a couple of good atmospheric ideas poorly streamlined together. A little bit more attention to structure and some shake-up once the themes have been established could do wonders for what you have.

Fun drums

Really interesting beats, very subdued melody. It's nice, but not terribly ear-catching.

Very well composed

The only thing I can think to add here would be a bit more exotic or interesting flavor on your percussion and a little bit of adding to the bass of your mix as most everything is in the mids to high range. Nonetheless it still works very well.
Things blend very well, and the marimba/vibraphone melodic hits give a feeling of flightiness that I'm sure is intentional.

Heavy panning abuse?

Why is the intro panned so hard to one side? Panning that extremely with an exposed texture makes everything feel a bit lopsided.
Drums don't line up with you melody terribly well. All around it sounds very sparse in every sense of the word.
Try expanding you melody to more than 1 or 2 looping measures, it will help keep things a little more interesting and exciting for your listener.

Add some dynamic contrasts

Seems a bit empty... Those drums could use a little bit more punch. I think some playing around with dynamics could really help the more repetitive parts of the piece.

The piece on the whole pretty quiet and doesn't fill out the soundscape terribly well. The percussive style synth you added around 1:40 got very tiring on the ears, I would suggest intermittent use of it, if at all.

Some nice features

The slower attack on the low strings in the beginning makes them seem a little bit off time.
Everything works pretty well, but the ending leaves much to be desired as it doesn't loop seamlessly and doesn't have a resolution of significant merit.
The voice sample in the background fades out a bit noticeably (i.e. I kind of wished it had persisted until the ending).
Hope you found some of this constructive.

Good with some mastering and range issues

Good, interesting progressions. The melody is nice, but the highs are just too overpowering. This arrangement is painfully top heavy half of the time. The piercing chimes melody is a little bit too much.
